Weather Woes in Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools, colleges, and private institutions in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi districts due to heavy rainfall.
In response to the inclement weather, Anna University has postponed semester exams in four districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Tuticorin.Additionally, distance education examinations scheduled in Nagercoil have been deferred, with the revised schedule to be communicated later.
Thoothukudi experienced severe waterlogging due to continuous heavy rainfall, leading to concerns about rising water levels in lakes and rivers. According to IMD predictions, heavy rain is expected in specific districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi.
The downpour has resulted in 40 lakes in Kovilpatti reaching their full capacity, causing overflowing. Efforts to control water flow involve the use of sandbags and JCB machines in areas like Koosalipatti and Inam Maniyachi.
Rajesh, the District Development Officer of Thoothukudi district, reported on the situation, stating that 40 lakes in Kovilpatti Panchayat are full. Precautionary measures are being taken, and authorities are monitoring the lakes for potential breaches.
The Tamil Nadu government, prioritizing safety, has deployed the State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Tenkasi districts. Relief camps have been set up to accommodate those affected.
Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, KKSSR Ramachandran, emphasized the government’s commitment to people’s safety, with ministers and IAS officers overseeing operations in the affected districts. The Chief Minister has advised on-the-spot monitoring and additional disaster response forces have been deployed.
In Tirunelveli, flood-affected individuals have been relocated to the Thachanallur relief camp, where essential needs and food are provided. Tuticorin and Tenkasi districts are also experiencing heavy rains, disrupting normal life. The Meteorological Department warns of cyclonic winds in eastern coastal areas and the Gulf of Mannar.

Severe rainfall, driven by a cyclonic circulation, wreaks havoc in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari. Life is disrupted, and flooding is widespread, particularly in Tirunelveli and Nagercoil.
